TikTok, one of the most popular social media applications in the world, is trying to remove videos that are shared on the platform with a person who committed suicide.
Suicide videos are removed on many social media networks. However, disgusting images are shared by users in the +18 category in Reddit.
The video, which has been shared on the platform for a few days, has been circulated on Facebook and shared on Instagram.
TikTok stated that many young people were traumatized because of this vídeo, which is a widely used application especially by young people, and announced that it will also ban accounts that upload the same video over and over again.
US ex-soldier Ronnie McNutt took his life on social media live, causing a stir. When the images in question spread rapidly on different platforms, experts warned about the access of children.
Although social media has become an integral part of life in recent years, its harmful effects in terms of children’s use are also highly debated.
The British press has warned families against a rapidly spreading image on social media. Ronnie McNutt, a former soldier living in the US state of Mississippi, ends his life in the image in question.
Making a statement on behalf of TikTok, the official said, “Our systems automatically detect and mark these clips because they violate our policies against content that exhibits, praises, glorifies or encourages suicide.”
Facebook said in a statement to the BBC, using similar expressions, “We removed the original video from Facebook last month, the day it was published. Since then, we have been using automation technology to remove all downloads.”
“My daughter may have post-traumatic stress disorder”
The family of a 14-year-old girl who watched the video in Edinburgh, Scotland, told the BBC that their daughter may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
She stated that the daughters of the family watched the video after appearing in the “Suggestions for you” section on TikTok.
The girl’s mother said, “I’ve also heard troll videos and gross stuff before, but it was above everything. I called the police but they told me that controlling the internet was not their job. My daughter was in shock, she is still in shock and could be under the influence of this video for months.”
Anne added that after the incident, her daughter was unable to sleep in the dark and continued to relive the images she saw.
It was also reported that the suicide video in question was shared by some users hidden behind the cat videos.
TikTok’s algorithm also offers users videos from people they don’t follow.
On the other hand, it is known that many suicides have been carried out live since Facebook Live was launched in 2015.
Facebook, which also owns Instagram, has been the focus of criticism that it has turned into a platform where suicide and self-harm are made emotionally striking.
However, this did not prevent the video from being spread on other platforms. According to The Sun’s report, images of suicide continue to be shared on TikTok, Snapchat and Whatsapp with misleading names and descriptions.
Experts suggested that families increase control over children’s use of social media and keep them away from these platforms for a period of time.
